Supporting men & women of the U.S. Armed Forces

Many veterans returning home have years of experience in the field but without college degrees, are unsure how to apply their skills as they look to rejoin the workforce. According to Tony Lee, publisher of CareerCast.com, most veterans are more qualified than they realize for positions ranging from software engineer to industrial engineering technician.

FCA US LLC is proud to support the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces, both at home and abroad. The Company currently has 20 employees on active military leave. Among U.S. employees, about 312 people are currently active or inactive Reservists while 4,256 employees are veterans.

Learning on the job
Currently, FCA US sponsors a handful of programs that actively help veterans and service members obtain full-time positions. One such program is a partnership with the Prestige Group Company.

Since 2011, Prestige Engineering Resources and Technologies, based in Clinton Township, Mich., has helped returning war veterans and active-duty military personnel secure internship positions while they finish their degrees. As interns for the company, the veterans are required to work a minimum of 35 hours per week while attending college courses. Working side by side with lead engineering teams offers the veterans a chance to learn the business from the inside out.

“With the support for FCA US, this program was created to give veterans an opportunity they normally wouldn’t have,” Tom Nichols, Prestige Group executive vice president, said. “The program has changed lives in ways we will never fully understand.”

Marcy Brown is one of the program’s first graduates to complete a four-year degree. In May 2014, she graduated from the Art Institute in Michigan with a fine arts and digital communication degree. Brown said she never could have imagined herself as a product design engineer at FCA US without the help of the program.

“I am so very grateful for the chance this program has given,” Brown said. “Being a mother of two lively children, going to school, working full-time and being an active member of the National Guard has been draining and overwhelming at times, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

Crystal Powers, a graduate of the program, is now a Material Area Supervisor at the Trenton (Mich.) Engine Plant.

Another employee, Crystal Powers, Material Area Supervisor at the Trenton (Mich.) Engine Plant, also became a Prestige Engineering alumna when she graduated from Davenport University with a business manufacturing degree in August 2014.

Powers, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who once served a three-month tour in Kuwait, is now a Material Area Supervisor at Trenton Engine. She began her internship in August 2013 and supervised more than 18 hourly employees as she finished her degree.

“If you would have asked me a few years ago what I would be doing today I would have never guessed I would be a full-time employee at FCA US,” Powers said. “Getting to this point took motivation and discipline. Without this program I wouldn’t be here; I can support my family and I love what I do, there’s nothing better than that.”

Throughout the years this program has grown to serve more than 40 veterans who are currently enrolled in engineering, manufacturing, supply chain and advance design programs at FCA US. 

NextVet
Another organization the Company supports as the primary sponsor is the Inforum NextVet program. Inforum is a Michigan-based professional organization that helps accelerate careers for women by combining strategic connections and professional development programs to boost talent initiatives for companies.

“This program is specifically aimed at helping women veterans acquire positions with FCA US and other organizations,” Dawn Poteau, Senior Manager – Talent Management, said.

In addition, in 2015, FCA US plans to sponsor recruiting events focused on connecting with veterans. In the past six months the company has sent job postings to more than 500 veteran-funded programs and organizations as it continues to expand job opportunities with veterans around the country. 

Proud Partnerships

FCA US has numerous military related programs emphasizing community growth, support and gratitude throughout the U.S. and the world. A few highlights include:

  • Annual monetary donation to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation program
  • Support towards the construction of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.
  • Financial support of the United Service Organizations (USO)
  • Donation of Jeep® vehicles to selected Operation package recipients
  • In 2013 in partnership with the USO, began “Operation SAFE Return” which offers support to troops and their families. Through such efforts, the Jeep brand continues its commitment to the military that stems back more than 70 years.
