Last year, the Jeep® brand set a major milestone with more than 1 million in global sales. As Jeep Brand CEO Mike Manley said, “2015 will be a transformational year in the globalization of the brand.”

And FCA’s newest plant – in Goiana, Pernambuco, Brazil, which officially opened April 28 – is a major part of the Jeep brand’s transformation this year. The facility can produce up to three different models simultaneously and is starting with production of the Jeep Renegade for sale across Latin America.

The Renegade is the first Jeep brand vehicle produced in Brazil in more than 30 years and the plant is FCA’s largest and most modern facility worldwide, both will play an important role in the group’s global strategy.

Pernambuco Facts
While the new plant is important to FCA, it’s clearly important to Brazil as well.

Pernambuco historically has been one of the poorest regions in Brazil, where the economy has been predominantly dependent on sugar cane production for more than four centuries. FCA’s investment will give a significant boost to the economic and social development of the local area.

In addition, approximately 80 percent of components will be sourced domestically, generating further significant benefits for the Brazilian economy.

Training
One of the greatest challenges in getting the site ready for production was recruiting and training personnel, of all levels, in a region without an industrial tradition.

With the support of the state of Pernambuco, a range of technical courses were organized in mechanics, electrical systems and electronics.

In addition, an exchange program was set up with the Politecnico di Torino in Italy, giving students from local universities the opportunity to earn a dual degree in automotive engineering. With the contribution of these initiatives, the Pernambuco plant has built a team of professionals equipped to share, develop and apply the most advanced technical know-how in the automotive sector.

Sustainability Efforts
The principles of sustainable development have been an integral part of the project from the very beginning. In terms of environmental performance, the plant’s target is to achieve 100 percent recycling of solid waste and 98 percent reuse of water used in production processes.

In addition, during the construction phase, a project was launched to restore indigenous plant species and conserve the biodiversity of the local ecosystem.

Enhancing Education
On the education front, a major program has been launched to improve the level of public education and open new full-time schools. This program will benefit approximately 8,000 students in the next 3 years.

Lastly, to contribute to public health services available to the local community, FCA has built a new hospital with an emergency care unit in Goiana, in addition to launching a range of initiatives to promote employee awareness on health issues such as the importance of healthy eating and prevention of various chronic diseases.
